When I visited the house of the raja of Hitu Mesing about 1965, I recorded a couple of kapatas sung by a man with an incredible voice named Ismael. He was accompanied by a group of women who faithfully echoed every verse he sang. He had a beautiful drum shaped like a big wooden bowl with its middle cut out and a skin stretched across its top. I think they called it a "rebana". Here is one of these two kapatas from memory: 345.6.55........ 6.5. 3.4.332........ (and repeating the words) 333..221........ 3.2.2.2.171........ (Thus each couplet is sung once by the lead singer and then repeated by the choir) Yami he i lete He i lete Hunut o Yami mara ila Wa au Samasuru o Suli taa si lai Sala ne kotika o Another went like this: 66...66666...... 55....555....... 66...6672.1.7.6.55...55555...... Upu Uli Halawan, Sopo hini e! Hitu a yupu a hata, Lai na malono lima.
