The following Tobelo tales told me by Andy Palihema: The men of a certain village left on a raiding expedition in the black of night. The tide was receeding. They paddled all night unaware that they were stranded on the reef in front of their own village and going nowhere. As dawn began to break, they saw a village ashore and said, "This must be the village." Just then, their canoe was freed by the rising tide, and they made it to the beach. They went ashore looting and killing, and as it grew brighter, they discovered that they had destroyed their own village. Two men in a canoe decided to leave their sago ashore. One said, "I'll mark the spot." So he took his knife and marked the side of his canoe. When they returned later, the one said to the other, "This is the place. I see the mark." They were still some distance from shore, so he dove into the water, and began groping about for his sago.
