January 4, 1965. The following collected from the Raja Latukonsina, of Pelau, on Moluccan origins: Four races make up the population of Ambon-Lease. These are the Tuni (Asli), of Nunusaku, seram; the Wakan, of Banda, and the eastern islands; the Mahu, who came from Sriwijaya and Mojopahit; and the Moni, who came from islands to the north, and the Philippines. Those who came from the west are straight-haired. The Wakan have kinky hair. These tribal names are often found in modern family names. The five villages, Hulaliu, Pelau, Kailolo, Rohomoni, and Kabau, all sprang from the Uli Hatuhaha clan at Hatuhakai about thirty generations ago. Hatuhakai may not be a village, but the name of a nomadic clan. Pelau was capital from the beginning. The population was wasting away with famine and plague. The people of the Hatuhaha clan decided they must seek a great leader to deliver them. They resorted to magic (mawi), and were led to a famous woman (name forgotten), who had become pregnant without a man. They decided that, male or female, her child was to be their leader. They erected a stone, and called it their king until the child was born. The woman brought forth my ancestor, Latu Rone, who was made king. He is also known as Rone-a-sina in song. Sina means to weave, (as nets, etc.). Tuarihia came from Seram, and subdued Latu Rone's enemies, who had forgotten the original agreement. He brought Latu Rone up to make sure he became king. halawan, n. gold. salaka, n. silver. mamo, n. iron.
