Nusa Laut and Ambelau were originally one land. There were two brothers and a bread-fruit tree. The young brother gathered the fruit with a pole. The older brother became jealous and they quarreled. The younger brother threatened that he was gooing to leave. One night there was a terrible thunderstorm and the island was broken apart. The part that broke away was cast up near Buru, and is now called Ambelau. When the older brother arose next morning his little brother was gone, so he knew what must have happened. Men from Ambelau must call men from Nusalaut older brother to this day, even though the man from Ambelau be old and the male from Nusa Laut a mere child. The language of Nusa Laut and Ambelau are not alike. The language of Nusalaut is the same as CEramese.
