L. Diao on the history of Ternate, Ternate, 1968. In Ternate, the most important before Islam was the Kolano, or king. Second came Jougugu. The Kolano was both king and prime minister in a single office, similar to that of president. The Jougugu was "wakil" to the Kolano. In other words, "wakil perdanamenteri." The third was the Kapitan Laut (or "Jou Laut"), an admiral. Then came the Hukum Suasio, a judge. After these came the four "Falaraha," (fala=house, raha=four). The falaraha were a group of four senators who represented the people. These "falaraha," or "four houses," were Marsaole, Tomagola, Tomaito, and Tamadi. These four houses changed from time to time, until now the falaraha consists of Marsaole, Tomajikotoloko, Limatahu, and Tomagola (Tomatola). These are all clan names, and the clan chiefs were the falaraha. The two tribes of Ternate are the Cim and the Hako. There are twelve clans in the Cim tribe. Heko also has twelve clans. Each clan possessed one or more kora-kora, or war vessel. The people represented the military. If the falaraha wanted to depose a kolano, all they had to do was obtain the favor of the Heko or the Cim,and they would change kolanos. But the new kolano would always be from the Foramadiahi clan, which was the clan of the royal family. Only Foramadiahi people could become kolanos. The Hukum Suasio had to come from one of the falaraha clans. The others could come from either the Foramadiahi or the falaraha clans. Because the falaraha were too powerful, their members were increased to nine, and then to 18. Then the Hukum Saqaji (Sangaji) was added. Mojopahit never reached Ternate. Mojopahit only came to trade in iron, brass, rice, and clothing, etc. In Ternate there were only cloves, and the North Moluccans didn't know how to build transport vessels. In Ternate, only kora-kora, or war canoes, were made. Mojopahit saw no reason to take Ternate, but was interested in trade. The Javanese didn't know how to pick cloves. It was easier for them just to come and buy cloves. They needed the spice trade. "Boki" means "princess" in Bacian language. In the beginning, the Moro people held all of Halmaheira. The Ternate people originate from Halmaheira. The Cim (Tjim) are evidently from nearby, whereas the Heko probably come from near Jailolo. The Cim probably sought fertile soil because of the erosion that took place on that part of Halmaheira. In the 14th century, an Islam conference of five was held. Loloda and the others sat below Ternate, which was called :... Ternate was on the table, and the four others were seated at the four corners. Zainal Abidin ruled ternate at the time. Quon kadada madopo, qom kaxalam madiki. (Ternate's name). When the Kolano of Ternate of the 1322 confederation on Motir died, he was replaced by his sister's son. I think his father was an Iraqi. This new ruler had an Iraqi name. Many Iraqis arrived here then, evidently because they were fleeing from the Turks or somebody. His father was Pati Serang, or Pacaronga, both names of the same Kolano--the one at the confederation. He died soon after the arrival of the Iraqis, who were evidently refugees from the Seljuk invasion. These Iraqis were mostly Buaihi. They were Shia, not Suni. They had great wealth.
